Whirlpool Fort Smith

Whirlpool Corporation, a responsible corporate citizen of the Fort Smith community for many years, has been working in conjunction with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), the City of Fort Smith, and area residents to address the trichloroethylene (TCE) detected in the groundwater immediately below and adjacent to its former Fort Smith manufacturing facility. Whirlpool, with continued oversight and guidance from ADEQ, has been following a science-based remediation plan to attack and remove TCE from the groundwater under and near the former manufacturing facility.

ADEQ has determined there are no complete pathways to exposure and thus no health risk to area residents.

Whirlpool has completed required and supplemental remediation activities and extensive groundwater and soil vapor monitoring during the past seven years, and remains committed to keeping Fort Smith residents and elected officials informed of important developments.

Whirlpool continues to monitor groundwater and soil vapor conditions on-site and at off-site locations, in full coordination with ADEQ. Comprehensive monitoring has been performed continuously in accordance with the Revised Groundwater Monitoring Plan as approved by ADEQ on September 26, 2016, and Action Plans have been submitted to and approved by ADEQ to address any areas of concern.

Whirlpool is pleased to continue to work with ADEQ on the path forward that will verify projected plume moderation and direct responsive actions if conditions warrant.
